In times of asymmetrical threat scenarios, the entire spectrum of military missions increasingly comprises deployment in built-up areas. These confusing and widespread operational areas not only make reconnaissance missions and mobility difficult, they also mean unexpected fighting at close quarters. Military operations in urban territories therefore place especially high requirements on the deployed troops.

All-round protection against anti-tank weapons, IEDs and mines is just as important to successful operations as armament suitable for close-range engagements, effective visual systems for near-field surveillance, high mobility in built-up areas and prevention of collateral damage.
