The KMW Virtual Reality (VR) Center represents an innovative solution for handling of extensive CAD models. It is based on a human-machine-interface focused on the human senses and abilities:

• Stereoscopic visualization offers separate images for the viewer’s eyes supporting an easy and reliable recognition of complex spatial structures.
• Two-handed interaction with six degrees of freedom based on optical tracking technology allows the user to interact with CAD models in an intuitive way.

The main application of the KMW VR – Center is support of the engineers during the vehicle design process. A seamless integration in the CAD environment is achieved through an automated data import. In addition to the geometry information, the model structure consisting of hierarchical parts and assemblies is converted during this process.

The KMW VR -center is entirely based on Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) compo­nents and available for a wide range of platforms, like

• 3D-Laptops with red/cyan stereo glasses,
• CAD workstations with active stereo shutter glasses,
• mobile stereo projection systems with tracking,
• curved screen systems with up to 360° field of view.

Some features of the KMW Virtual Reality software are:

• three dimensional, context sensitive menu system,
• interactive CAD structure browser,
• model reassembly with collision avoidance,
• real time cutting operations,
• various measurement tools,
• multiple navigation modes including guided flight
• high rendering performance using occlusion culling
