Live Firing Monitoring Equipment (LFME)

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann

The KMW Training & Simulation (T&S) Live Firing Monitoring Equipment (LFME) is the training aid supporting the training of the crew in live firing.
It closes the gap between the simulator-based and combat manoeuvre training. With the LFME it is possible to observe the actions of the tank crew during live firing without interruption. Not only the vehicle and weapon data of the entire tank units are transmitted to the instructor, but also a live video stream of the commander’s and gunner’s targeting systems.
The intercom is also available so that the instructor gets a comprehensive picture of the performance of the entire crew during combat firing in respect to operation of the weapon system. The instructor is further supported by the remote-controlled down-range camera with day and night vision capability and by an electronic hit evaluation system which can be part of LFME.

For debriefing, the instructor can draw on the comprehensive video sequences from the combat vehicle, the pictures of the down-range camera, as well as on the data of the hit evaluation system.
The biggest benefit for the crews is quick training success, as mistakes of the crew can be corrected immediately. Ammunition is used efficiently and lost rounds are avoided. In dangerous situations the instructor can intervene and block the main weapon remotely. The procedures are not impaired and firing on moving targets during movement is possible without any restrictions.
LFME is available as a platform-independent training aid for various combat vehicles. LFME is already in use for MBT’s (Leopard 1&2, Challenger 1&2), IFV’s (YPR, CV90) and Anti-Air Gun Tank (Gepard).
