The LEOPARD 2 A7+ was developed for the new missions of the German Army and qualified by the German defence authorities. The system focuses especially on the protection of the crew is and   currently proving its reliability in Afghanistan with the NATO-Partner Canada. Key performance features are:

•  a passive all around protection for the crew against threats
    like improvised explosive devices (IED's), mines or rocket
    propelled grenades (RPG's)
•  an interface to apply devices like mine-ploughs, mine-rollers
    or a dozer blade to clear impassable roads from mines,
    IED's or debris
•  an air-conditioning system
•  an external intercom
•  a front and rear thermal image system for the driver
•  improved optronics for long-range surveillance
