The Armoured Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) is a future-oriented, innovative command and multipurpose vehicle, which has been developed as a joint venture between Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and its partners. Its trademark: high mobility coupled with optimised protection. The AMPV concept is the result of long-standing experience based on the modern military operation spectrum of the Federal Armed Forces. The AMPV vehicle family is equipped with a robust high-performance chassis with individual wheel suspension, long spring travel and high ground clearance. With a turning circle of less than 15m and 200kW power output, it delivers excellent performance under all conditions.

A new benchmark is being set in this vehicle class with the self-supporting safety cell made from armour steel and composite armour. This provides a protection level exceeding current requirements, as well as important weight savings.

The vehicle family comprises two type series. In terms of vehicle dimensions, the AMPV 1 is the smaller type and comes into its own as an agile liaison vehicle. The AMPV 2 is set apart mainly by a higher level of protection and a higher payload. Yet the entire vehicle family is based on standardised engineering principles and technologies. AMPV 1 and AMPV 2 boast extremely compact dimensions. Moreover, from a logistics perspective all the vehicles feature largely identical components. This ensures simplified supply and training for all vehicles in the AMPV family.

Also planned is a special patrol version of the AMPV 1, which is suitable for loading into the CH53 transport helicopter.

With an empty weight of just 7.3 tons the AMPV has a payload of 2.0 tons and can accommodate four soldiers and a variety of armament variants. For self-defence purposes, the vehicle can be fitted with a weapons station on the roof, this being equipped with either a machine gun up to 12.7 mm or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

With its compact dimensions and very high protection level the AMPV is also highly-suitable for police and security forces, which feel increasingly exposed in high-threat operations. Here too, the AMPV offers the contemporary response.

KMW hat den Brückenlegepanzer LEGUAN auf Basis der Kampfpanzer LEOPAR D 1 oder LEOPAR D 2 bereits für die norwegischen, griechischen, belgischen und finnischen Streitkräfte realisiert. Das Verlegesystem kann jedoch auch auf andere gebrauchte oder neue Fahrgestelle von Kampfpanzern aufgebaut werden. So ist es zum Beispiel auch auf Fahrgestellen des polnischen PT91, des U.S.-amerikanischen M1 „Wolverine“ und dem M47/M60 in Spanien im Einsatz.
