Unique system features - one solution
The DONAR is a 155mm / 52 calibre self-propelled howitzer. It comprises a fully-automatic, unmanned and autonomous artillery gun module and the ASCOD 2, a tried and established infantry fighting vehicle chassis.

As a joint European technology programme between KMW and GDELS, the DONAR and its unique system features will revolutionise today's understanding of artillery and replace the conventional systems currently being used by modern armed forces (e.g. M109, AS90 and K9). Thus, the DONAR will reduce the requirements placed on crew and logistics and will be used autonomously.

Air transportable
The overall system weighs less than 31.5 tons. That means it can be transported in the A400M, the future European transport aircraft or in a similar aircraft in this payload category.

Autonomous function
The fully remote control artillery module is equipped with a 155mm/ 52 cal. cannon. The fire power of the DONAR is therefore equivalent to that of a PzH2000. The maximum range exceeds 56 km (VLAP ammunition). Despite a notable reduction in weight and size, the gun module functions without additional stabilisation and can be rotated over 360°. Thanks to the system's autonomy, the DONAR fits seamlessly into the networked and centralised command and control system (network-centric warfare).

High mobility & survival tactics
The system features the high mobility of an infantry fighting vehicle, being based on a version of the ASCOD 2 adapted for artillery operations. The crew comprises two soldiers (driver and commander) who operate the system from a heavily-protected driver cab separate from the automatic gun module. This man-machine interface enables extremely fast firing and manoeuvring. The survivability of both crew and system is enhanced through the low silhouette and also by the cab protection, which satisfies a very high NATO protection class standard and protects the crew against small arms and shell splinters from artillery and mortar munitions.

Das Verlegesystem kann jedoch auch auf andere gebrauchte oder neue Fahrgestelle von Kampfpanzern aufgebaut werden. So ist es zum Beispiel auch auf Fahrgestellen des polnischen PT91, des U.S.-amerikanischen M1 „Wolverine“ und dem M47/M60 in Spanien im Einsatz. Die Brücke lässt sich auch von Radfahrzeugen wie zum Beispiel dem 8x8 der MAN und dem 10x10 Fahrzeug...
